GETTING STARTED
Who can be a Telepsychiatrist for my clinic?
Psychiatrists & APRNS: Any psychiatrist (MD/DO) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with a state license in Virginia can provide care via telepsychiatry.
How does reimbursement work for telepsychiatry in Virginia?
Each telepsychiatry session generates two billable codes:
- The standard CPT codes for outpatient, psychiatric services
- An originating site fee known as Q3014. The originating site fee is a Telemedicine Bonus that allows clinics to receive reimbursement for the use of the facility where telehealth services are rendered.
Medicare
Clinics are eligible for Medicare reimbursement in Virginia if they are located in a HPSA (Health Professional Shortage Area).
Medicaid
In Virginia, the Medicaid Q code pays $20.00. The Medicaid fee schedule is searchable at the professional fee schedule link found here.
FQHCs
FQHC telemedicine providers must submit their claims using the appropriate encounter code and modifiers. Use modifier AM or SA in the first modifier field on the claim form with the modifier GT in the second modifier field.
What tech does my clinic need?
Setting up telepsychiatry at your clinic is simple. The set up will require:

- A two-way video telecommunication system that allows for real-time communication between the provider and patient
- HIPAA-compliant video conferencing technology
